Your privacy is very important to us

The Friends of Italian Americans (FOIA) respects your privacy. We created this Privacy Policy to demonstrate our commitment to your privacy and security. This Privacy Policy describes how FOIA collects information from those who access our site but do not have accounts ("Visitors") as well as those who may contact or 'Join Us' ("Members"), what we do with the information we collect, and the choices Visitors and Members have concerning the collection and use of such information. We request that you read this Privacy Policy carefully. By providing Personal Information, you signify that you consent and agree with the terms of this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree with any term of this Policy, please do not provide any Personal Information. If you choose not to provide Personal Information, you may not be able to do certain things, like access particular areas of our website, or send us e-mails.

Collection of personal information and how it is used

As used in this Privacy Policy, “Personal Information” means personally identifiable information such as your name, street address, telephone numbers, credit card information, screen name and e-mail address. FOIA collects information in different ways from Visitors and Members who access our Web site. We use this information to help us understand more about the interests of our users, to identify members, to send out newsletters, and to send promotional materials. At times we may share this information with trusted third parties to help analyze the data we collect or to help us improve our website. These third parties are not authorized by us to use your personal information in any other way. Also, we may disclose personal information collected if we have received your permission beforehand or if required to do so by law, or by search warrant, subpoena or court order; or to bring legal action against someone who may be violating our Privacy Policy or Terms of Use Policy; or to protect FOIA and our Members.

When you decide to become a Member, or if you decide to make a donation, you will be asked to provide certain personal information including your name, address, telephone number, and billing information (if donations are collected through PayPal or similar 3rd party). The personal information collected from Members during the registration process is used to manage each Member's account.

Responses to email inquiries

When Visitors or Members send email inquiries to FOIA, the return email address is used to answer the email inquiry we receive. FOIA will also use your email address for general communications and monthly newsletters.

Voluntary surveys

We may periodically conduct both Visitor and/or Member surveys. We encourage our Visitors and Members to participate in these surveys because they provide us with important information that helps us to improve your user experience. Your personal information and responses will remain strictly confidential, even if the survey is conducted by a third party. Participation in our surveys is voluntary.

"Cookies" and how FOIA uses them

A "cookie" is a small data file that can be placed on your hard drive when you visit certain Web sites. FOIA may use cookies to collect, store, and sometimes track information for statistical purposes. FOIA may use a cookie to save your settings and to provide a customizable and personalized user experience. We do not use cookies to retrieve information from your computer that you have not explicitly revealed.

“Session Variables” and how FOIA uses them

Session variables are small files that are temporarily transferred to your computer's memory (cache), not to your computer's hard drive. Session variables may be used on some of our pages in order to store your preferences or access information during a particular session. We do not use session variables to retrieve information from your computer that you have not explicitly revealed. Session variables exist for the length of your visit if you are a Visitor and until you log out if you have registered for a login account.

FOIA's commitment to children's privacy

Protecting children's privacy is especially important to us. Our Terms of Use requires that users be 18 years of age to register. We do not knowingly collect any personal information from anyone under the age of 18. If you are under the age of 18, you should use this website only with the involvement of a parent or guardian and should not submit any personal information to us. We encourage parents of children under the age of 18 to regularly check and monitor their children’s use of e-mail and other activities on line. We do not have the ability to prevent a child from registering in violation of our Terms of Use.
